Maybe there has always been a homosexual plot to take over the holiday season...
A Queer Carol (AQC) is, as its title suggests, a 'very gay version' of the Dickens holiday staple A Christmas Carol. This adaptation sets the Dickens classic among a contemporary Montreal backdrop covering four decades of the later half of the 20th century.
This unconventional spin on the timeless tale casts the famous characters in a new light. The cast is filled with a number of gay icons and stereotypes: the Ghost of Christmas Past is the ghost of Marilyn Monroe; the Ghost of Christmas Present is a sassy celebrity drag queen; Fezziwig is a swishy, lisping party jokester. Although these provide some of the funniest moments in the play, and the performances are marvelously entertaining, what may surprise most about AQC is how felicitously true to the original version it finally is. Many adaptations of A Christmas Carol are often played for laughs, and while there are a sumptuous amount of chuckles to be found in AQC, it's actually a thoughtful portrayal of gay relationships and all too real and relevant social issues.
While the play may be the umpteenth version, it promises nonetheless to be the most original revision that you'll ever come across. It really is very heartfelt so don't be surprised if a tiny tear forms in the corner of the eye unexpectedly, tears of sympathy and of laughter. AQC is welcome entertainment for anyone who has seen the Nutcracker one too many times or who just can't sit through another airing of It's a Wonderful Life . This holiday themed season of Harvest will fill your silk stockings with plenty of enlightening and entertaining performances that will undoubtedly be followed by plenty of good cheers!
